The nuclear-powered Enterprise is the first aircraft carrier of its kind and is one of the largest ships ever built. This gigantic aircraft carrier was put into service on 25 November 1961. Eight water-cooled reactors generate a total power of 300,000 hp, with which the ship reaches an average speed of 35 knots. The displacement is 75,700 tonnes and the flight deck is 76.8 metres wide. 414 officers and 4,260 crew members are on board on average. Since the Enterprise is independent of external supplies due to its nuclear propulsion, large fuel depots are available for the on-board aircraft. The largest and most modern aircraft of the U.S. Navy can be operated from the Enterprise.
