In 1976, the FIA introduced a new Group 5 with specific rules reserved for "special" production cars on the international racing scene. The new regulations prescribed a similar body width to the production cars, but to which larger mudguards could be fitted to take advantage of the increased track widths and oversized tyres. BMW entered the Group 5 competition with a special version of its new top-of-the-range model, the E21 "320". A new aerodynamic profile with large wings was developed and a powerful 300 hp engine was used. The car was successfully used by the official team of the Munich manufacturer and also formed the basis for the training of young junior drivers.
