The North American P-51 Mustang was an American single-engine fighter during World War II. It was manufactured in the US factories of North American Aviation. It was successfully used in the US Air Force and by its allies during World War II and during the Korean War. The highly successful 1940s design meant that the aircraft remained in service in one or more countries until 1984! Over a period of 46 years, more than 15,000 Mustangs were produced. Today many of these aircraft are in private hands, including our fictional hero Maverick! Mustangs are still used in air shows and air competitions today.
