The Sd.Kfz 182 Panzer VI Ausf. B “King Tiger” heavy tank was put into service with the German army from mid-1944. It differed greatly from the Tiger I and was characterised by its heavy weight (almost 70 tonnes), remarkable armour, forward sloping hull and fearsome 88 mm KwK 43 L/7 gun. The King Tiger was capable of reaching a top speed of 42 km/h with its Maybach V-12 engine. Two different turrets were used for series production: the Posche turret and the Henschel turret, which was produced in much larger numbers. Both turrets could not only accommodate the 88 mm cannon, but also 80 shells. In 1944, the King Tiger was deployed for the first time by the 503rd Heavy Armoured Battalion during the Battle of Normandy.
