The Boeing B-17 became synonymous with the heavily armed strategic bomber during World War II, although with 12,677 aircraft it was far from being the most widely built machine of its kind. It was named the Flying Fortress by an American journalist after its maiden flight, and it stuck.
The Boeing B-17F was the first Flying Fortress to be mass-produced. The most famous aircraft from this series was the Boeing-built B-17F-10-BO, which was delivered on 15 July 1942 and entered service with the 324th Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group at Bassingbourn, England. It was named Memphis Belle by its crew, after the girlfriend of pilot Lt. Robert K. Morgan. Her fame resulted from the fact that she was officially the first US Army Air Force bomber to survive 25 missions in Europe and became the star of a Hollywood propaganda film. After this mission, the Memphis Belle and her crew were ordered to the USA. It was later purchased by the city of Memphis and erected in the open air as a memorial. In 2004, the B-17F underwent a complete restoration, and today the Memphis Belle is once again open to the public.
