The “Tornado” is the result of a joint project between Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom to develop a powerful multi-role combat aircraft. The main requirement, however, was to develop a modern state-of-the-art aircraft capable of conducting low altitude penetrating attack missions. This requirement was met by developing a twin-engine fighter with a variable camber wing.
The Tornado GR.1 (Ground Attack/Reconnaissance) was the first version introduced by the Royal Air Force in the early 1980s. In 1996, the Tornado was upgraded to the Gr.4 standard, which featured improved operational capabilities, new avionics systems for navigation and the introduction of new on-board technologies. These systems enabled effective identification and tracking of targets and weapons management of the newer generation of weapons such as Paveway IV bombs and Storm Shadow cruise missiles.
