The Short Stirling was the first four-engined British heavy bomber of the Second World War. The design had a high wing, four engines and a cabin mounted above the fuselage. The airframe was made entirely of metal. Another feature of the bomber was the impressive size of the landing gear. From late 1940, the first bombers were used to equip Royal Air Force Bomber Command Squadrons. Operational status was achieved in January 1941 and the first wartime sortie was in February 1941 against the logistical formation at Rotterdam. Stirling Mk. I was capable of carrying a substantial attack load of over 6,000 kg of bombs and was armed with eight 7.7 mm machine guns for defence. The direct successor to the Mk.I version was the Mk.III, equipped with new and improved Bristol Hercules XVI engines and improved defensive armament.
