The SR-71 Blackbird is an American reconnaissance aircraft that served in the United States Air Force from the 1960s to the 1990s. It was designed by Lockheed Martin and was one of the fastest aeroplanes in the world. Its maximum speed exceeded Mach 3 (over 3,700 km/h) and its operational altitude of up to 26 km made it difficult for missile defence systems to shoot down. The SR-71 had an advanced titanium design that allowed it to withstand the extreme temperatures generated during supersonic flight. It was mainly used for intelligence gathering and its ability to evade enemy missiles was a legendary advantage.
