After Neil Armstrong was the first to set foot on the moon (Apollo 11, 21 July 1969), NASA sent a car with astronauts David Scott and James Irwin just two years later (Apollo 15, 31 July 1971) so that they could drive around on the moon instead of walking. The most scientifically interesting lunar rock samples would never have been collected if the LRV ("Lunar Roving Vehicle") had not been able to expand the area of exploration. The LRV was an impressive feat of engineering. It had to carry twice its mass of 209kg, withstand micrometeoroids, which are faster than projectiles, and function reliably in temperature fluctuations of 260ºC. During the Apollo 17 mission, the rover travelled a total of 36 km in 4 hours and 26 minutes, although the longest distance from the lunar module was only 7.5 km, as it always had to be dimensioned so that the astronauts could always get back to their landing vehicle on foot in the event of a breakdown. To this day, three LRVs are permanently parked on the lunar surface.

The 1:15 scale spring-powered wooden model features rotating and swivelling wheels, a parabolic antenna, a camera at the front and an ingenious mechanism to fold the rover - just like the original - into a more compact form for transport in the spacecraft. When you unfold the wheel sections of this dynamic masterpiece of transformation, you will be amazed as the axles lock into position super-fast and the wheels with their rubber treads automatically move into place. A key hidden underneath the chassis is used to wind up the mechanism, and thanks to the start/stop switch you can first wind up and then start your rover so that it covers a distance of approx. 3 metres.

The NASA moon rover from Ugears is also equipped with a folding double seat for the astronauts and a parabolic antenna. This can be folded up and stowed on the side of the rover, or mounted using the groove on the left front of the cabin for use. The model camera arm can be positioned at the front of the vehicle so that the control centre can see and record your adventures! The engravings on the rover and its wheels represent the numerous electrical cables of the real LRVs, while the punch-outs and other designs on the various parts of the model make the rover lighter and contribute to its realistic appearance.

NASA's DIY moon rover is made of high-quality plywood. Interchangeable rubber bands activate the dynamic transformation mechanism and drive the wheels. You don't need any glue or special tools to assemble this cool, spacey 3D puzzle - you'll find everything you need in the box. Press the parts out of the sheets, into which they are pre-cut with a precision laser, and then put them together. Follow the detailed instructions with colour illustrations, which are available in 11 languages (Ukrainian, English, German, French, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, Chinese and Korean). To ensure proper operation of the rover, pay special attention to the gears by lubricating and operating all moving parts during assembly. If your start/stop lever gets stuck, use the winding spanner to turn the drum. Make sure the interlocking 90º gears are seated correctly (you can push the frame to achieve the correct fit). Wood is a natural material that is relatively durable, but sometimes individual parts can break during assembly. If this happens, simply let our customer service team know.
