Get to know the dragon! The Chinese New Year 2024 begins on 10 February and ushers in the Year of the Dragon, the fifth symbol of the Chinese zodiac. The dragon is a special sign because it is the only imaginary animal in the Chinese calendar. There are actually five dragons: Metal, Earth, Fire, Water and Wood. At Ugears, we are particularly excited that 2024 is the year of the Wood Dragon, an event that only occurs every sixty years! Dragons are considered energetic, creative, diplomatic and born leaders. As wood dragons are associated with a living element, they are capable of significant growth, resulting in a rich abundance of all dragon qualities.
As a symbol of the emperor and the power of the empire, dragon statues could be found in China almost 8000 years ago. Unlike European dragons, which are seen as fearsome monsters to be fought, Chinese dragons are associated with prosperity and good fortune. They are often depicted with a flaming pearl between their teeth or in their claws, a symbol of universal Qi, the source of all energy and creation. In addition, the pearl symbolises wisdom, spiritual power and immortality. Because of these favourable and sought-after qualities, more children are born under the sign of the dragon than under the other signs in countries that follow the Chinese calendar!
The wooden dragon from Ugears is a 3D puzzle box and a DIY model of an auspicious dragon with a glowing red pearl in its left claw. The long, sinuous wooden dragon with four limbs, based on the style of dragon depictions in Chinese art, sits on a special stand with a hidden drawer that pops open as soon as the secret button in the shape of a flower is pressed (the drawer is closed by hand). The dragon can be removed from the stand and placed on a surface to admire it in detail. Hide a secret message, something valuable or a small treasure in the stand of the wooden dragon. You can also place a special red envelope (known as 紅包 or hóngbāo) with a gift for the Lunar New Year in the drawer and then hand over the wooden dragon with both hands and ask the recipient to open the treasure box!
