The Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft is undoubtedly one of the most famous aeroplanes in aviation history and is considered an icon of British aviation production. Together with the Hawker Hurricane, the single-engine low-wing aircraft with a good armament formed the backbone of the Royal Air Force's combat units during the Battle of Britain against the German Luftwaffe in its first versions. The aircraft was characterised by its harmonious design, the elliptical wing shape and the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Over the course of the war, the Spitfire's aerodynamic configuration and engines were constantly refined in response to the technological innovations of the enemy, which led to the development of the extraordinary Focke-Wulf Fw 190. A concrete example of this is the Spitfire Mk IX, which was able to compete with the more advanced German fighters under the same conditions thanks to its performance.
