1:72 Operation Market Garden Hartenstein
After the Normandy landings in June 1944, the Allies planned to invade German territory in order to end the war as quickly as possible. Operation "Market Garden", planned by Bernard Montgomery, envisaged bypassing the German defences by deploying British, American and Polish airborne troops. The paratroopers were to take control of the bridges in the Netherlands between Eindhoven and Arnhem in order to secure the routes for the Allied forces to enter Germany. However, strong German resistance and the failure of the Allies to cross the Rhine thwarted the operation, which proved to be a failure. The war continued and it took further months of fighting before the Allies invaded Germany. Hartenstein was the centre of activity during Operation Market Garden and served as the headquarters of the 1st British Airborne Division.
