The royal houses, the church and the trade alliance have conspired to control all avenues of power. Despite centuries of rule, they do not manage to control everything. There are still a number of lesser noble houses clinging to dwindling fiefs and fading titles, resisting attempts by other houses to subjugate them. Smaller orders and sects endeavour to find converts among the lost, forgotten and heretics. Smaller guilds eke out an existence in the shadow of the larger guilds, selling goods and services that are ignored by the larger guilds. And some of these smaller factions are aliens: the ape-like Gannok, the hoof-like Shantor, the bird-like Etyri, the amphibious Oro'ym, the insectoid Ascorbites and the reptilian Hironem. In the Pax Alexius, any of them could rise above their rivals and claim a say in the fate of the Imperium.
The Faction Book introduces the minor houses (from Eldrid to Xanthippe), minor sects (from Chorali to Preceptors) and minor guilds (Apothecaries to Wranglers) of the Fading Suns universe. There are also the Pagans (Zuranists and Gjartins), the sentient alien species of the known worlds (from Ascorbites to Shantor) and the Altered, the genetically modified mutants despised by the superstitious populace for their wondrous gifts.
