Product Description
The Sturmgeschütz IV was developed on the chassis of the Panzer IV medium tank to provide the German army in the advanced stages of the Second World War with an assault gun that could also be effective as a tank destroyer. The Stug IV was equipped with a Stuk40 75mm L/48 high velocity gun, installed in a casemate and protected by an armoured mantlet, capable of penetrating the armour of the main enemy armoured vehicles. Distributed to units in the first months of 1944, it supplemented and often replaced the Stug III assault gun, which experienced a sudden drop in production during 1943 due to increasingly frequent attacks by Allied bombers on German industrialised areas. Widely used on the Eastern Front, the Stug IV was also deployed by the Wehrmacht's armoured units and anti-tank troops in Normandy, where its low profile made it particularly difficult to identify in the hedgerows of the French countryside.
