COBI-5760 - 405 PCS HC WWII /5760/ MACCHII C.202 FOLGORE
The Macchi MC.202 Folgore was one of the most important and successful Italian fighter aircraft in the Second World War. Its advanced design and good performance made it a formidable opponent in aerial combat. Despite limitations in armament and production, the MC.202 went down in history as a symbol of Italian aircraft construction during the war. Now this legend of the Italian skies is available in a version made from clamp-on bricks.
The aircraft, made from 404 elements, adds a touch of Mediterranean freshness to the COBI range. The model features camouflage from the Mediterranean theatre of operations. Durable and indelible prints have been used to apply green spots to the sandy ground, blurring the silhouette of the aircraft in the air. The fighter has folding landing gear, movable landing flaps and a perfectly replicated figure of the Italian pilot can be placed under the removable cockpit roof. The aircraft is supplied as standard with a display stand bearing the name and a transparent stick that gives the aircraft the impression of flying.
The Macchi MC.202 was a further development of the earlier MC.200 Saetta model, which had poorer performance. Designer Mario Castoldi used the Daimler-Benz DB 601Aa engine, which significantly improved the aircraft's performance compared to its predecessor. The MC.202 prototype first flew on 10 August 1940, series production began in 1941 and the first aircraft were delivered to linear units in the same year. The MC.202 was used extensively in the African campaign, where it posed a serious threat to Allied fighters. Its speed and manoeuvrability were comparable to those of the Spitfires and P-40 Warhawks it encountered in combat. After the fall of North Africa, the MC.202 was used in defence of Italian territory against Allied air attacks and in battles around Sicily. The MC.202 also served in the Balkans and in the defence of Rhodes. The aircraft was highly manoeuvrable, making it a formidable opponent in aerial combat, and its durable and solid fuselage structure enabled it to survive in difficult combat conditions. The aircraft was not without its shortcomings. The relatively light armament compared to Allied fighters, in the form of 12.7mm machine guns, was less effective than the cannons fitted to many Allied and German fighters.
