Product Description

The Avro Lancaster B Mk.I/III was a key element of British bombing strategy in the Second World War. Its ability to carry large bomb loads, its durability and versatility made it one of the Allies' most effective and versatile bombers. The presented model bears the markings of the Polish 300th Bomb Squadron "Ziemia Mazowiecka". In addition, the model features moving propellers, retractable landing gear, a hinged bomb bay with block bombs, a block with the name of the set, a miniaturised interior and a figure of a Polish 300th Bombardment Squadron pilot.

The design of the Lancaster began with the Avro Manchester design, which had engine reliability issues. After the addition of two extra engines and other modifications, the Lancaster was born. The first Lancaster prototype (BT308) first flew on 9 January 1941 and the aircraft quickly proved its superiority over the Manchester. Production of the Lancaster began in 1941. Mk.I was the first production version, powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. XX Mk.III differed from Mk.I mainly by Packard Merlin engines, which were produced under licence in the USA. The Lancaster entered service with No. 44 Squadron RAF in February 1942. It quickly became the RAF's main bomber. The Lancaster was mainly used for night bombing raids and was instrumental in many important bombing raids, including the bombing of Hamburg (Operation Gomorrah) and Dresden. Lancasters were used for a variety of special missions, such as Operation Chastise (dam raids) and for dropping heavy bombs such as the Grand Slam and Tallboy, which could destroy heavily fortified targets.300th Bomber Squadron "Ziemia Mazowiecka" was an important part of the Polish contribution to Allied operations in World War II. Its members fought with great sacrifice and contributed with their courage and skills to the success of the RAF in the bombing campaign against the Third Reich. The squadron remains a symbol of the Polish contribution to the fight for freedom and independence during one of the most difficult times in history.
