Autumn of Terror is set in the second half of the 19th century. Explosive population growth, mainly due to immigrants from Ireland, Europe and Russia, meant that the area around the harbour was completely overpopulated. Jobs and housing were scarce. Hunger, alcohol and theft were just as commonplace as crime. Many women secured the survival of their families through casual prostitution.
All this misery was concentrated in the Whitechapel district.
Then the slum was shaken by a brutal series of murders. The victims, all prostitutes, have been horribly mutilated and disembowelled. Everything points to the work of a sadistic madman.
