In Beer & Bread, exactly two people compete against each other in a neighbourly contest. As the heads of a small village, they compete over six years for the most delicious beer and the crispiest bread. The players share the fields and ingredients, but the production actions decide who wins and who loses. Only those who achieve a balanced ratio of beer and bread will be victorious, as only the less lucrative goods are scored.
A game of Beer & Bread lasts six rounds. Fertile and dry years alternate. In each year, fields are first filled with ingredient markers, then cards are dealt. In the action phase, cards are then played in turn. Each card has three sections: Harvest & Storage, Production & Sale and Expansion & Cleaning. However, only one of the actions can be used at a time. Players must therefore think carefully about which action they want to use next. The fertile years are particularly challenging, as the card hands are swapped after each turn.
