The Bismarck, whose sister ship was the Tirpitz, was commissioned in August 1940. She went into service under the command of Captain Ernst Lindemann and was the largest and most powerful battleship at the time. She could reach a maximum speed of 30.1 knots (approx. 56km/h). Her armament consisted of eight 380 mm QFG L/47 twin guns, twelve 150 mm QFG L/55 twin guns, 16 105 mm L/65 A/A and 16 37 mm A/A and 12 20 mm A/A guns.
