The single-engine Sabre F-86 fighter aircraft was developed by the North American Air Force at the end of the 1940s and became a symbol of post-war aviation. The fighter aircraft is characterised by the typical arrow wings, the large front air intake and the use of the General Electric J47 jet engine. Its flight speed and performance were optimal for the time and differed significantly from those of fighter aircraft with the traditional piston engine. It was armed with 6 Browning M3 12.7 mm calibre machine guns installed in the nose. It was widely used by the U.S.A.F. and took an active part in the Korean War, where it was directly confronted by the Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich Mig-15 fighter, sparking the first "dogfights" between jet aircraft in the history of aviation. The F-86 proved to be extremely efficient and many pilots distinguished themselves by shooting down numerous enemy aircraft and achieving the qualification of "ace".
