In the 1960s, Mercedes-Benz began developing a range of sports cars characterised by high performance and attention to detail in order to focus on the growing "luxury" sector. The acronym SL, the initials of "Sport" and "Leicht", characterises the various models that have been developed and launched over the years. In the 1970s, the German group launched the R107 and C107 series as a roadster and coupé, quickly achieving great commercial success. The C107 was also used to develop the top-of-the-range SLC 500 coupé, which was produced for almost a decade. With its 4,973 cc engine producing 237 hp, the Mercedes SLC 500 became the benchmark for the "premium" market, producing iconic models in the 1970s that are still the dream of many collectors and enthusiasts of historic vehicles today.
