Stalingrad was the final objective of the German 6th Army. The Russian city, named after the communist arch-enemy, was the centre of fierce hand-to-hand and house-to-house fighting from November 1942 to January 1943. In the end, the German 6th Army was forced to make the ultimate sacrifice: 150,000 German soldiers were killed and there were huge losses of equipment.
The Germans were never able to recover from these losses and were eventually forced into a long retreat from Eastern Europe. To mark the 80th anniversary of this event, we have compiled a series of German AFVs that were used in this bloody battle 80 years ago.
