Northrop F-5 was created in the 1960s with the aim of meeting the needs of numerous NATO member states that required a simple, economical and easy-to-maintain multi-role combat aircraft. From the original airframe, the F-5E Tiger II was born in the early 1970s. Equipped with a pair of new J85-GE-21 engines that delivered significantly more power and thrust than the previous version, the model featured an extended and enlarged fuselage. The improved flight performance achieved with the new aerodynamic layout, the longer range and the improved avionics have resulted in the Tiger II being successfully used by numerous air forces. The basic equipment consists of two 20 mm cannons installed in the nose below the cabin, with the option of using various combinations of air-to-air missiles. In addition to its primary role as a fighter aircraft, however, it also retained extensive ground attack capabilities.
