In 1964, at the World's Fair in New York, an attractively styled coupé designed especially for teenage drivers was presented to the public. This sporty and affordable Ford Mustang, the progenitor of the Pony Cars, was available from April 64 and in just six months Ford sold an incredible 680,000 of them. In 1965 a high-performance road version of the Mustang, the GT 350, built by Carroll Shelby, appeared with a 4.7-litre V8 engine. The car rental company Hertz ordered 1000 examples of the GT 350 H (H stands for Hertz) in black with gold trim to be able to rent race cars to customers, who very quickly took a liking to the 306 hp exceptional Mustang.
