The Panzer IV was used in various versions by the Wehrmacht throughout the Second World War. It formed the "backbone" of the Panzerwaffe on all fronts. The production of the Panzer IV Ausf. F. represented a decisive turning point in the development of the tank. In addition to the reinforced armour and an improved turret, the traditional 75-mm KwK 37 short barrel gun was first used in the F1 version and finally, in the F2 version, the particularly powerful 75-mm KwK 40 long barrel gun. The latter was characterised by a high initial velocity of the projectiles and improved penetrating power. The short-barrelled guns were no longer able to penetrate the increasingly resistant armour of enemy tanks, such as the Soviet T-34. The introduction of the long barrel gun therefore represented a significant improvement in combat power and made the Panzer IV once again a "lethal" weapon on the battlefield. The F2 version was used, albeit in too small numbers, mainly by the 15th and 21st Panzer Divisions on the North African front.
