Product Description
During the Second World War, the Alpini divisions were deployed on several fronts. In 1942, the Italian Expeditionary Corps was sent to the Russian front to support the Wehrmacht. It comprised the Alpini Julia, Tridentina and Cuneense divisions. The Italian Alpini took an active part in the defence of the Don front, but were outnumbered and surrounded by Red Army troops. The Alpini divisions were forced to retreat in a long and heroic march through the cold expanses of the Russian steppe. Heavy fighting also took place during the retreat. The most famous is the Battle of Nikolayevka, which took place in January 1943.
