The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (G stands for off-road vehicle) is a vehicle manufactured by the German company Mercedes-Benz in various series since 1979. In some European countries it was marketed as the Puch G. By 2017, over 300,000 vehicles of this class had been built. The history of the G-Class has its roots in 1972, when the leaders of the German company reached an agreement with the Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch to produce a modern and elegant off-road vehicle, but one that would also be robust and efficient, in short, suitable for any use. The production of the G-Class essentially consisted of three generations, all with the same mechanical design and basic structure, of the type with separate chassis with all-wheel drive, transmission with reduced gears and rigid axle suspension. In the first versions brought to market, the transmission was a manual 4-speed, although transmission variants had diversified considerably later. The first generation was also produced under the Peugeot brand under the name Peugeot P4; the other two series were produced more or less in the same period.
