At the outbreak of World War II, England was ill-prepared for the supply of technical war equipment. In the field of motorbikes, which were mainly used to transmit messages between combat units, civilian models were used with minor modifications (military paint, additional mounting frames for saddlebags).

These motorbike messengers became famous as DR "Dispatch Riders". Triumph quickly developed the military bike 3HW from the civilian model "Tiger 80", with an overhead valve engine and parallelogram fork. It was used at short notice on all fronts where British troops were fighting, in Europe, Africa and Asia. After the end of the Second World War, many friendly nations were equipped with British war material, among others Italy and Greece received a number of Triumphs. These machines remained in service for many years thanks to their reliability and robustness.
