In 1941, after the German attack on Russia, it became clear to Americans that the possibility of US intervention in the war effort was drawing ever closer. For this reason, President Roosvelt ordered a major production expansion of the M4 tank. This tank was not a completely new model, as it was based on the previous M3 "Grant". The Sherman had some major improvements in superstructure and armament, as well as a cast or welded body. The "General Sherman" - by which name the tank soon became known - was equipped with a 75 mm gun, but it was inadequate against the German tanks. This necessitated a series of modifications that included a completely new turret. A much better 76 mm gun was also fitted. The new type was given the designation M4 A1. In January 1944, the new type was introduced. Until the end of the war about 3400 units were produced. Despite the improvements, some faults became apparent, especially in the armour. Often the crews were forced to protect the sides and the bow. In some cases the exposed parts of the tracks were covered and sometimes even steel or concrete plates were mounted. However, thanks to its numerical superiority, the tank was able to hold its own against the German tanks, benefiting particularly from its great mobility and 76 mm gun. M4 A1 tanks took part in all theatres of war from the Normandy landings to the Mediterranean via the Eastern Front.
