Product Description

The US aircraft carrier CVN-65 Enterprise, also known as "Big E", was for a long time the world's largest ship and the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. It is the eighth ship to bear the designation "Enterprise". With the introduction of heavier and heavier jets, the need for an enormously large aircraft carrier grew. Construction of the mega-ship began on 4 February 1958. The CVN-65 was launched on 24 September 1960.
The waterline is 317 metres long and 40.5 metres high. Propulsion is provided by eight A2W pressurised water nuclear reactors and 4 Westinghouse steam turbines with a total output of 280,000 horsepower. With this power, the carrier can travel 140,000 nautical miles at 36 knots or 400,000 at 20 knots. The construction cost was $450 million. The Enterprise CVN-65 carries 94 aircraft, including the F-14A Tomcat as well as A-7E Corsair II, A-6E Intruder, S-3A Viking, EA-6B Prowler, E-2C Hawk Eye and SH-3H Sea King helicopters.
