It was powered by a 12 hp side-controlled 1-cylinder engine with 500 cm³ displacement.
During production, various modifications were made - for example, the last motorbikes have an air filter on the tank.
Over 126,000 were built during the war, most of them used by the British Army. They served on every front for a variety of tasks, for example for the field post and as supply escorts. Some of the motorbikes were also used by the RAF and the British Navy.
After the war, the M20s continued to serve throughout the 1950s, and some were even used into the 1960s.
