XB-70 In the days of the Cold War, the dream of every strategist was surely to have a strategic bomber with the carrying capacity and range of the B-52, but which could fly faster than the B-58: in this way, the B-70 programme was born. After years of development and a neck-and-neck race with the Boeing, North American Aviation was declared the winner in December 1957.

The first 30 aircraft were scheduled to enter service in 1965. But by 1959 it became clear that the new air combat scenarios would not have allowed the B-70 to survive in a hostile environment, and the programme was drastically reduced. In the end, only two prototypes were completed, the first of which flew in September 1964. However, the XB-70s proved capable of overcoming Mach 3 and are now considered by many scientists and aviation enthusiasts to be the finest aircraft ever built.
