Product Description
The M109 self-propelled gun was developed at the express request of the US Army, which needed a heavy howitzer that was highly manoeuvrable in any terrain and would replace the obsolete M-44. The first M109s entered service in the early 1960s and quickly proved the suitability of the project. The M109 was also constantly improved to adapt it to changing mission requirements. The 155 mm main armament was also improved, with the introduction of the M185 gun with a long barrel and considerably longer range from version A1 onwards. The subsequent A2 version included further improvements to the gun, the aiming system, the ammunition and the target acquisition system. It was produced in large numbers and was intended to equip the American armed forces and the main N.A.T.O. Allied countries.
