The American twin-engine supersonic Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the iconic aircraft of the USA. Navy fighter squadron in the 1980s and 1990s. It was distinguished by its rotating wing, twin tail and two-seat tandem cabin. The "Tomcat" could boast impressive operational performance data. Thanks to its two General Electric afterburning turbofans, a top speed of Mach 2.34 could be achieved. Equipped with a 20mm M61 Vulcan rotary cannon, a variety of weapon systems could be employed, including the AIM-9 Sidewinder, the AIM-7 Sparrow and the AIM-54 Phoenix long-range radar-guided missile. The F-14 entered service in the 1970s, replacing the F-4 Phantom II to take over the role of air superiority fighter. During its operational career it was involved in many military conflicts from the Gulf of Sidra crisis to the Iraq War.
