The USS Hornet was completed in 1941 as the third aircraft carrier of the Yorktown class. She is best known for her pivotal role in the so-called Doolittle Raid on 18 April 1942, the first US air attack on the Japanese home islands. Only a few months later, in October 1942, the Hornet was heavily damaged by Japanese bombers in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands and was finally sunk on 27 October. Most of the crew could be saved beforehand by the American escort ships, nevertheless 111 men died. The highly detailed TAMIYA model kit includes parts for 16 B-25 bombers in addition to the aircraft carrier.
