From the mid-1970s until 2009, the S-3 Viking was the US Navy's standard anti-submarine fighter. The large twin-engine aircraft was used as a carrier-based aircraft to fight enemy submarines and for remote sensing. The standard equipment consisted of a MAD (Magnetic Anomaly Detector) boom that could be extended from the tail, sonar buoys, anti-submarine weapons and infrared sensors under the cockpit. The Navy had a total of 178 produced. In direct comparison with its predecessor, the Grumman S-2 submarine hunter, the S-3 could cover a sea area three times as large and carry twice as many weapons and buoys.
