300061114 - Model Kit,1:48 Grumman F-14A Tomcat

The Grumman F-14A Tomcat of the American Navy still enjoys great public interest since its decommissioning in 2006. The first flight of the F-14 was in December 1970 and production started in 1974 and ended in 1992. Powered by two TF30 engines, it reached a top speed of about Mach 2.3 with afterburner thrust. The complex operation required a second man, the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) in the cockpit, hence the two-seater design.

Perhaps the most striking detail is the pivoting wings, which can be swivelled from 20° to 75° (20° for take-off and landing, 55° for the respective mission, 68° supersonic flight, 75° parking position (hangar/aircraft carrier deck)). The pivoting wings allowed speeds from landing to top speed depending on the situation. The accommodation and use of the various weapon systems made the F-14 a versatile carrier system and successful interceptor.
