510006198 - Model Kit, 1:72 Montecassino '44 Gustav Line
During the Italian campaign from January to May 1944, Allied forces under the command of General Mark Clark advanced on the German 10th Army under General Heinrich von Vietinghoff, which was entrenched along the Gustav Line. The cornerstone of the Gustav Line was the small town of Cassino, which controlled the valley of the Liri River. Cassino itself was dominated by the historic Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino, which provided an important strategic observation and defensive position for the German troops.
The determined resistance of the German troops, who held their positions for almost four months, was aided by the difficult weather conditions that hindered the Allied advance. Fierce battles were fought in an attempt to drive the Germans out of their stubbornly held defensive line. It was not until mid-May that the German positions were broken through, allowing the Allies to advance on Rome in June 1944 and secure the liberation of the city.
