Developed in the 1950s, the Vought F-8 Crusader was a carrier-based fighter that replaced the obsolete Vought F7U Cutlass. Its Pratt & Whitney turbojet engine with afterburner allowed the Vought F-8 to exceed the then maximum speed of Mach 1.8. The Crusader was routinely used by the US until the Vietnam War. The carrier-based fighter squadron of the French Navy also used the fighter. A total of 1261 were built.
The fighter was armed with four 20 mm guns installed on the sides of the large front air intake. The Vought F-8 Crusader was the last military aircraft whose primary armament was a machine gun, which is why it was nicknamed "The Last of the Gunfighters".
