Product Description

The floor model is a recreation of the USS Yorktown CV-5 aircraft carrier, which was the first ship of the namesake class and the sixth aircraft carrier of the US Navy to be completed in 1937. When the Pacific War broke out, the carrier became the flagship of Task Force 17 under the command of Rear Admiral Frank J. Fletcher and conducted a series of operations around the Pacific. During the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942, the Yorktown CV-5 helped thwart the Japanese Navy's advance on New Guinea despite heavy damage. In the Battle of Midway, the Yorktown and her sister ships USS Enterprise and USS Hornet defeated the Japanese mobile fleet, but the Yorktown herself suffered heavy damage from torpedo and bomb strikes from the aircraft of the Japanese carrier Hiryu.
