The Macchi MC 202 Folgore ("Thunderclap") represented a decisive innovation for the fighter sections of the Italian Air Force ("Regia Aeronautica") during the Second World War. About 1,150 were built and were used from 1941 onwards. The single-seater fighter was equipped with the powerful 12-cylinder DB 601 engine from Daimler-Benz, which was built under licence by Alfa Romeo. The flight performance was significantly increased compared to the previous generation fighters equipped with radial engines (Fiat G-50 and Macchi MC 200), so that the Regia Aeronautica was once again able to fight "on equal terms" with the Allied fighters. The Macchi MC 2020 Folgore was very manoeuvrable and almost 600 km/h fast. Nevertheless, the first version was armed only with two relatively weak 12.7 mm calibre Breda SAFAT machine guns, which was only changed in later versions with additional machine guns in the wings.
