In 1940, after the outbreak of the Second World War, the US Joint Chiefs of Staff ordered various manufacturers to develop a light multi-purpose vehicle with four-wheel drive. The American Bantam Company, Willys Overland and Ford Motor Co. competed. The choice fell on a Willys prototype which, after an initial production run of 1,500 vehicles, went into series production in early 1941, reaching a total production of 640,000 units. 277,000 units were produced by Ford under a licence agreement. This made the Jeep the most frequently produced light vehicle in the war industry during the Second World War. Even 80 years later, the "Willys" with its distinctive shape is still considered "the" four-wheeled light vehicle of the American army during the Second World War. Thanks to numerous collectors and enthusiasts, there are still plenty of well-preserved and perfectly functioning "Willys" in existence today.
