SAAB JAS 39 Gripen is a modern, lightweight Swedish multi-role fighter manufactured by the aerospace company SAAB in co-production with BAE Systems. The name of the Gripen aircraft refers to the SAAB crest that houses the neck and emphasises the multi-role nature of the aircraft. The acronym JAS was created from words with Swedish meanings: Jakt - hunt, Attack - attack, Spaning - reconnaissance. Gripen is a powerful multi-role machine that can do all these tasks. The configuration of the duck and the wing in the delta configuration makes it possible to develop high speeds. According to the specification, the take-off and landing distance is only 800 m.

The fighter has been produced and developed since 1987. The export version "C" according to the specification of the NATO countries has been produced since 2003. The aircraft have been used by the Czech, Hungarian, Swedish, South African, Thai and Brazilian air forces. In the UK, Gripens are used as training aircraft at the Empire Test Pilots' School.
