The Redcloaks are armoured with half-armour, the best that money can buy in mass production. This gives them a measure of defence and makes them capable of deflecting blows from all but the strongest enemy soldiers. The fact that they are well paid also benefits them on the battlefield, as they know they don't want to lose their next pay.
