About 350 million years ago, we are on the eve of one of the greatest invasions in world history: the landfall of vertebrates. Various species of fish are abundant in the ocean and the first creatures are already crawling ashore. Great evolutionary advances in the form of new genes are on the horizon. Which creatures will gain dominance on the primordial land through reproduction and the acquisition of new genes?

The Ichtyostega, or "Ichtos" for short, are at the center of Urland. These primordial creatures were the ones who dared to "step" out of the water onto the land. Each player takes over one color of the Ichtos and tries to bring it as far forward as possible on the development table. Initially, three of the different colored Ichtos are placed in each water area on the primeval land (including the ocean), which is divided into different parts. Before the game even begins, one of the volcanoes that exist on each land area erupts, connecting two adjacent land masses. Now each player places one Ichto in randomly determined land areas, so that there is already a lot of activity on the land as well.
