The Gneisenau is a German World War II battleship that was commissioned on 21 May 1938. Both the Scharnhorst and the Gneisenau were a new type of German battleship. They were characterised by larger dimensions, speed and more powerful weapons. They were created in response to naval expansion in France. The Gneisenau took part in many combat operations, including the famous Operation Berlin in 1941, where it proved very effective. It was sunk in Gdynia on 28 March 1945 to blockade the harbour.
