In 1489, probably the greatest universal genius of all time drew the design for a “propeller” or spiral rotor. Da Vinci’s dream of mechanical flight not only led to the first concept of a helicopter, but was also the first step towards everything that aviation encompasses. However, the world had to wait until the early 20th century before the first machines capable of lifting off the ground were invented, paving the way for today’s helicopters – aircraft capable of taking off and landing vertically, staying stationary in the air, and flying forwards, backwards and sideways.

The Ugears Mini Helicopter is the first helicopter model in our Smart collection and joins the Mini Biplane, Crazy Hornet, Steampunk Airship and Flyer (with interchangeable aeroplane and helicopter components) in the fabulous Ugears family of aircraft. The open design really reveals all aspects of this DIY helicopter model. This 3D puzzle of a helicopter features many realistic details. These include a spinning rotor mast and main rotor, spinning tail rotor, two-seater cockpit with cyclic control sticks, doors that can be opened, an adjustable searchlight at the front, retractable rear wheels, landing skids and a vertipad on which you can place your model.

To put your Ugears mini helicopter into operation, set the start/stop switch to “stop”, then make several turns with the spanner to wind up the rubber band motor and extend the rear wheels. Then place the model on a level surface and hold it carefully while you set the switch to “Start”. Then let go and your helicopter will take off about 1.5 metres. Look how impressively realistic the spinning main rotor is! When your helicopter is not in operation, you can place it on the included vertipad, which makes it look even more attractive.

With 167 parts, this is a simple model, but the extraordinary Ugears design ensures that this DIY helicopter toy also has that “wow effect”. To assemble your model, simply press the parts out of the high-quality plywood panels and then fit them together using the illustrated instructions provided. Use the sandpaper and wax provided to sand and lubricate all moving parts. It is also important to “break them in” well by moving them several times before final assembly so that the mini helicopter works perfectly afterwards.

The mini helicopter is a great gift for kids who dream of taking to the skies or for all fans of aviation or model making. Even Leonardo would probably have fun assembling this model!
