The third-generation M1 Abrams tank is the backbone of the armoured divisions of the US military and the Marine Corps. The Abrams is characterised by its heavy armour (it is one of the heaviest combat vehicles in the world) and the use of the powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. Great attention was paid to crew protection thanks to the separate and heavily protected ammunition depot. The M1 Abrams, which entered service in the early 1980s to replace the obsolete M-60, features a sophisticated fire control system and modern armour. Initially armed with a 105 mm cannon, it was subsequently equipped with the more modern and powerful 120 mm smoothbore cannon, which can fire a variety of projectiles. The Abrams has been used to deadly effect in all major theatres of operations from the Middle East to Afghanistan and has proven superior to all other enemy tanks.
