The stand model is a replica of the Fairchild Republic A-10A, also known as the Thunderbold II.
The need for air support for small targets was recognised early during the Vietnam conflict. Following an experimental development programme begun in the early 1970s, the Fairchild Republic Industries A-10 Thunderbolt II was selected for production.
The required performance characteristics included operation at unimproved short fields, both high and low airspeed manoeuvrability, ease of maintenance, long endurance and range, excellent pilot protection and capacity for large mixed weapons loads.
The A-10’s appearance is remarkable, while its performance is astonishing. The A-10 has been in service since 1972 and proved itself again in the last Gulf War.
