The prototype of the Kübelwagen was presented in November 1938. It had a lightweight but torsion-resistant shell construction with a folding roof. The rear-mounted, air-cooled 4-cylinder engine had a displacement of 985 cc and an output of 23.5 hp at 3000 rpm, which took the car up to 80 km/h.
